How do you lay artificial grass on soil?

Mark out the area across which you wish to lay the artificial grass. Remove existing turf and pull up any weeds or use weed killer.

Ensure that the soil is compact and flat by rolling or stamping it down, then lay down weed control fabric. Cut your synthetic grass to size using a stanley knife (this is easiest from the underside).

Place the new synthetic lawn down and leave overnight, adjusting the next day. Ensure the grass is as flat as possible, then secure to the ground with ground pins at 20cm intervals. Brush a little sand over the top.

How do you lay artificial grass on concrete?

Don’t apply synthetic grass to severely damaged concrete.

Fill small cracks with levelling compound. Clean the surface and fill dents with sharp sand. Check that it's possible for water to drain from the area. Lay weed control fabric or use weed killer.

Cut foam underlay to size and lay in place. Attach underlay to concrete using Aqua Bond or similar synthetic turf adhesive and secure pieces together with gaffer tape. Cut your artificial grass and lay in place to settle overnight.

Next day, apply adhesive to the top of the foam and the joints. Lay the grass carefully on top.

Do you need underlay for artificial grass?

You’ll only need a foam underlay if you’re laying artificial grass on a hard surface like stone, concrete or decking. It helps the synthetic turf to feel soft underfoot and creates an effect that is closer to that of real grass. It can also smooth out lumps and bumps.

If you’re laying a synthetic lawn on top of existing turf, an underlay is not essential as the ground will already be relatively soft.

What is the best underlay for artificial grass?

Always use a specialist foam underlay when laying a synthetic lawn on a hard surface like stone, concrete or decking. We prefer sheets with at least 5mm thickness, as it’s soft underfoot and provides some cushioning to protect you against injuries caused by slips or trips.

It’s even better if you can find an underlay with channels that allow water to drain easily.

How do you clean artificial grass?

Depending on how thorough you need to be, you can brush your synthetic lawn with a broom or use a leaf blower to remove debris. Use weed killer to get rid of any unwanted vegetation, and apply a specialist artificial grass cleaner.

You can also spray the grass with a vinegar and water solution to remove bacteria from spillages or pet urine.

To remove trodden in gum, simply freeze it with ice cubes then scrape off.

Afterwards, brush across a light dusting of sand to keep the blades standing up properly.
